T-shirt design research...

T shirts by pharell williams that I thought suited the kind of style and look that I want to achieve with my range of mens t shirts, that kind of cool hiphop vibe!

I love the style of the design on this t shirt, I love the attention to detail and delicate line, I think this would suit the style of my t-shirt designs and ideas!

This is a really cool design...I love how they have played with the front and back of the t shirt continuing the design from front to back, I think it is definitely more unique and original1

These are a few designs I got off this internet clothing company...I picked these few out as I feel they experiment with the layout and composition of the designs are really catch peoples eye with the limited colour palette. I want my t shirt designs to use the same principles as these!

Tinchy Stryder's 'Star in the hood' t shirt range that is out in all the high street shops at the moment! Simple yet bold and effective type used. All designs are just simply one colour on different coloured t shirts.

Yeva Babayan

Designer that I came across on a blog...like the style and colour involvement, bringing two images into one!

Type by Doug Alves

Type face that I found that I think would really suit the style for my Alice's Adventures in Wonderland book cover design...it is beautifully illustrated and looks really angelic.

Sarah A King

Someone looked at my work and said that it reminded them of the work of this designer Sarah A King so I thought I would take a look, I totally agree with them, especially with the work that I doing for my t shirt brief! I think it was the use of type and image together and the way in which we both experiment with typography within the images.
I really like her work, it is alot more detailed than mine, I really want to get my work up to this high professional standard.

Lady gaga research....

I think it would be wicked if i could create a series of two colour t-shirts inspired by Lady Gaga....below are just a few examples of her extreme individual and unique character and there are soooo many visuals that I could use on the t shirts that relate to her. Her extreme make up, hair styles, vibrant colours, angular shapes and unique and one off outfits.

More existing penguin book covers....

Very traditional, old fashioned layouts above but I like the use of bold blocks of colour and limited colour palette.
This idea above could work quite nicely within my designs seeing as I am using a colour coding system where by the colour of the spin relates to the colour of the illustration on the front.

All the above images I have selected for the purpose of helping me with the layouts of type and image for my own book cover designs.  It has really helped me actually and given me an insight in what kind of style Penguin uses and the boundaries in which I can or can't push.  In general the type used is very simple but yet it is so effective, there are mixtures of sans serif and serif fonts and different weights and sizes are used throughout the different styles.

Some more examples of existing book cover designs...as you can see alot of different medias have been used for instance collage, photography, cartoons, patterns, vector based work, experimental typography, type and image combined etc. I could consider this when developing my idea.

Existing book covers...
Looking at limited edition books and features of them whether they have gold foiling or whether they are placed in a box of some sort to keep precious and damage free.

Below, I like the black ink on brown paper I think it gives a classic, old fashioned look.

Illusions

I found this illusion of mona lisa I think it is a really cool design..playing with line!

Magazine covers...i picked these out of the boko '100 years of magazine covers' i thought they related quite nicely to the work that I am doing for my Penguin Desgin awards brief...type illusions work really effectively...they really draw peoples attention to the cover.

I was thinking about the story of Alice's adventures in wonderland and I think illusions play quite a big part in the story...I could incorporate this into my book cover design...I havent seen anything like this for penguin before so it could potentially be a fresh idea...this design below is something i found on behance, it is a typographic experiment playing with the illusion of type. I think it hides a certain mystry and I think this suits the style of the book title.

Daren Newman

I thought his use of type and layout was very 'fairytale' kind of feel to it...this kind of layout of type could look good for my Penguin book cover sleeve.

Experimental type...

I have recently found this new website called 'behance network' where by creatives can display their portfolios and I have come across some really inspiring work. I love this fun and creative idea of inventing type using very day materials such as ice like the example below. It is so eye catching and engaging with the audience, I think it is a great way to create your own type face! I could bring this inventive and creative style into an appropriate brief of mine. I escpecially like the ketchup font, even though it is really simple i love it and I think it could work really well in the appropriate context.
